The purpose of the society is to promote the appreciation of the various forms of visual arts among all interested people, artists and public alike, in the Border region.  The Society aims to help growth and development of these arts and we strive for a high quality of service to our members.  As a member of the Society enjoys many benefits, such as: Monthly activities, including workshops, outings, lectures and art exhibitions.

The East London Fine Art Society sends a monthly newsletter to all its members, informing them of all upcoming activities, as well as any competitions and residencies (national and international).  Three group exhibitions are held every year: "Anything but Painting", "Peep Show Miniatures" and the "Annual Exhibition".  There are no selection criteria and entry fees per work are very reasonable (R10.00 for non-member, R5.00 for members).  The openings are usually well attended and sales are encouraging.

The society has been fully functioning since 1928, and has been involved in many notable art activities over the years, being instrumental in organising the Ann Bryant Art Gallery when the premises were bequeathed in 1946.  The society organised the Ann Bryant bequest of art into the collection by integrating art works from the existing municipal and educational Institutions-a huge task, voluntarily undertaken.  The Society's membership is currently about 90 paid up members, but serve a much larger art community and are a society with a long association with SANAVA and its pre-existing bodies.
