The South African Society of Artists is based in Cape Town and has a membership of over 400 people, comprising professional as well as amateur artists. The Society remains committed to its founders' aims of encouraging art and artists in the whole of South Africa. It arranges demonstrations and talks at monthly meetings by well known artists as well as lectures and ilustrated talks by well known art historians, artists and teachers. In summer, painting outings visits are arranged to beautiful places in the Cape to afford members the opportunity to paint. Many excellent homes and places such as Neethlingshof, Muratie, le Bonheur, Groot Constantia and Oude Nektar, have been visited, as well as Zeekoevlei Yacht Club, Hout Bay and Kalk Bay Harbours. Visits to galleries or other places of interest are organised for members. In the colder months workshops are organized to cater for watercolour, mixed media, pastel, acrylic or oil painting. Life-drawing sessions with models are also arranged for members in winter. Three exhibitions are held annually. Drawing and painting competitions are organized during the year.
