Absa L’Atelier Art competition
Presented by Absa in collaboration with SANAVAAbsa L’Atelier is Africa’s richest art competition. It is held annually for visual artists between 21 and 35. The award not only recognises emerging artists, but affords them the opportunity to develop their talents abroad. The winning prize is a R110 000,00 and a return ticket to Paris (France) from Absa. The money must be applied for a working sojourn between 3 and 6 months in a studio apartment acquired for this purpose at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. Four additional merit prizes of R25 000 are awarded, and the top ten artists each receives R2 000.
The Gerard Sekoto Award is sponsored by the Alliance Française, the French Institute and the French Embassy in South Africa. It was specifically established to award the most promising artist with an income of less than R80 000,00 per annum who enters the Absa L’Atelier competition. The winner receives a return air ticket to Paris, 3 months stay at the Cité Internationale des Arts, nationwide touring exhibitions, training in French and a commission for a poster for the exhibition – totalling a value of R80 000,00.

The PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards
Presented by the Association of Arts in collaboration with PPC CementThe competition is open to students or persons with formal or no training in sculpting, who have recently become acquainted with concrete as a medium and are 18 years and older.
Artworks will be judged on concept, craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and a balance between technical excellence and commercial appreciation. Entries must capture the true essence of the awards with concrete as the main medium.
Total prize money in the 2009 competition has been increased to R85 000. The first prize of R50 000 will be awarded to the winner of the Best Sculpture on Exhibition. The runner-up will receive R15 000. Two merit awards of R5 000 each are presented to artists who demonstrate skill and ability in concrete sculpture.

Sasol New Signatures Art Competition
Presented by the Association of Arts Pretoria in collaboration with SASOLOpen for entry to young and upcoming artists aged 18 years and older, the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition provides a platform for young artists to exhibit their works and enter the professional art world. Both the longest running and most prestigious competition for emerging artists in South Africa, the competition has played an important role in launching the careers of many of South Africa’s established and respected contemporary artists.
The competition carries total prize money of R100 000,00, comprising an overall first prize of R60 000,00, a runner-up award of R15 000,00 and five merit awards of R5 000,00 each.

Presented by the Arts Association of Bellville (art.b) in collaboration with SanlamVuleka is the Xhosa word for ‘open’ and that means this prestigious national art competition is open to any artist (18 years and older) who has not had a solo exhibition in the past three years. It is aimed at encouraging creativity, innovation and adventurous art from all cultures.
Artists may enter unlimited artworks in any of three categories:
- Paintings in oil, water colour or acrylic;
- Three-dimensional works; ceramics included, and
- Works in any other medium, including photography.
Apart from a winner in each of these categories, the best artwork overall will be selected.
For the overall winner a cheque of R10 000 and a FREE return flight ticket to Paris are waiting. The visit to Paris offers the winner the opportunity to gain new inspiration in the arts and broaden his/her horizons. Prize money of R5 000 is at stake for each category winner.

SANAVA has been alerted by Mel Harrison, Projects Manager of Carrol Boyes (Pty Ltd, about the company’s ‘Metal 2010 New Designer Search’. This is an annual initiative first launched by Carrol Boyes Functional Art in 2005, which is now in its 6th year of running. The theme for 2010 is ‘Design a Vase’. The 1st prize is R50 000, the 2nd prize is R25 000, and the 3rd prize is R15 000.

‘The Perfect Canvas’ by Woolworths
Please remind all members of the project which Woolworths is running in partnership with SANAVA, in terms of which artists who are members of the Association are encouraged to submit images of colourful work which Woolworths may decide to display on their eco-friendly shopping bags. Woolworths drew our attention to the fact that participants often tend to ignore the conditions relating to the exact sizes of images that are to be submitted as entries for consideration. The final printed size of the picture on the bag should be strictly respected. This should be 430mm (horizontal) by 300mm (vertical). Odd sizes may have to be cropped. Any medium (oils, pastels, watercolours, photography, etc) may be used. Slides are not acceptable.

Diane VictorThe City of Ekurhuleni is privileged to associate this national contemporary Fine Arts competition with the acclaimed resistance artist (Thami Mnyele), who gave a voice to the nation through his god given talent. Thami Mynele further expressed himself in words when he says; “Our Art must become a process – a living, growing thing that people can relate, identify with, be part of, understand; not a mysterious world a universe apart from them”.
A competition of this nature serves as a platform where artist are encouraged to transcend limitations, reconfigure and manipulate contemporary cultural social and political signs. It is the duty of dedicated artists to employ various medium to express metaphors, media and their aesthetic sensibility to reflect the world we live in. An entry fee of R50,00 per artwork is applicable
