Celebration of Heritage Day, 24 September 2008, by SA High Commission, Tanzania
As part of the Heritage Day (24 September 2008) activities, staged by the South African High Commission and the South African Tanzanian Committee in Dar es Salaam, thirty works by three South African visual artists, Lucas Bambo, Billy Molokeng and Michael Teffo, were selected by SANAVA to be displayed in a most successful exhibition, launched jointly with thirty works by Tanzanian artists. Both the South African and the Tanzanian National Committee for the Visual Arts are members of the International Association of Art (IAA). The exhibition is considered at the same time to have served as a building block for the establishment of a formal structure for the promotion of the visual arts in Southern Africa, thus complementing the global vision of the International Association of Art (IAA) and UNESCO.
2008 Africa Guest Painters Visit China Project
The Ministry of Culture of the Peoples’ Republic of China launched a ‘2008 Africa Guest Painters Visit China Project’, in terms of which six painters, under the age of 50, were to be selected and invited from nine African countries, for a working visit of two months to the Shenzhen Painting Academy in China, and to ‘exchange their artistic point of view with local artists’. SANAVA is pleased and honoured by the fact that its candidate, Miss Angela Banks (MA, Fine Arts, University of Pretoria, 2004), had been accepted for a residency from end September to end November 2008. In her first report-back communication, she pays tribute in glowing terms to the hospitality offered to the visiting painters, and that they were preparing for a group exhibition on 9 November.
She sent the following letter to the National President:
Hello Mr Loubser
I hope you are well and that everything is going well in Pretoria. I would just like to report back to you what is happening here. This has been a truly amazing experience... the Chinese people are so incredibly friendly and hospitable and everything has been so very well organised. The other 4 artists and myself arrived in Beijing just over a month ago, we were taken to many art galleries and museums and to many restaurants where we have experienced the amazing variety of foods China has to offer. We spent a week in Beijing and were then flown down to Shenzhen which is a big modern city that is busy and packed with people from all over China as well as foreigners. We are staying at the Shenzhen Fine Art institute which is known for its contribution to ink painting in China. The institute is situated in a very good area in Shenzhen, a resort area that is very beautiful with the densly vegetated hills that surround it. We each have our own room and our own studio where we are producing work for a group exhibition which will take place on the 9th November. The 'Focus on African Culture 2008' festival has been happening the last week or so. We have been treated like celebrities and have been interviewed by many journalists and have been published in local newspapers. We took part in the Round table meeting for the festival yesterday where myself and the woman from Cote d'ivorie made a speech... I was very nervous, but it went off well and everyone received the speech so well. The next two weeks are going to be very hectic as we are preparing the catalogue and finishing off the work for the exhibition. I will send you photos of the final works and of the festival in another email.
I would just like to thank you and Pieter for sending me here to do this residency.... I am thoroughly enjoying it and am learning so much and feel very proud to be one of the first African artists to be received at the Shenzhen Art Institute. Thanks so much for this opportunity. I will give you a report all about the trip on my return.
Kind regards
Angela Banks
